In May, the Virginia Beach CVB hosted its “One Beach, One World” FAM tour, focusing on the city’s CSR initiatives. During the event, attendees participated in a “Give-Back Marketplace” activity where they created hygiene kits for the homeless. Each guest was given backpacks to fill with various supplies such as toothpaste, soap, baby powder, etc., donated by Virginia Beach industry partners. In a tradeshow-like atmosphere, guests moved from table to table gathering items in their bags. As the event concluded, guests were able to see the fruits of their labor as approximately 150 survival packs were assembled and presented to a local organization, the Potter’s House. This activity serves as a great give-back model for meeting planners and future groups headed to Virginia Beach for a meeting, convention or tradeshow.

Virginia Beach’s meeting and convention landscape continues to flourish as the Laskin Road Gateway Project progresses. The development represents more than $100 million in combined public-private funds and will enhance the destination’s beach experience through creation of an attractive corridor where pedestrians will enjoy more than 64,000 square feet of high-end dining, retail and entertainment offerings. Phase Three of the city’s portion of this public-private development was recently completed, with significant streetscape revitalization resulting in a pedestrian-friendly corridor, along with infrastructure and utility improvements. The private portion is also advancing with construction of the mixed-use development, 31Ocean, which is well underway. 31Ocean includes a variety of upscale retail and dining amenities, Class A office space and 178 luxury residences. The final phase of the private portion is slated for completion in fall of 2012, while the public portion is set to wrap in spring of 2013.

In response to the rising trend of traveler reliance on mobile devices, the Virginia Beach CVB recently launched a new WAP (wireless application protocol) to help visitors easily find amenities that suit their needs and quickly determine how they will choose to experience all the resort city has to offer during their down time. Within just a few scrolls and clicks, users can discover their options for area activities, attractions, dining and events, giving those in town for a meeting or convention an easy way to make the most of their time in Virginia Beach. Unlike a traditional app, the WAP does not need to be downloaded to your device and works across all platforms by simply typing www.VisitVirginiaBeach.com into your mobile browser.
